What’s your favorite thing about the Warehouse District?

“It’s so hard to pick just one - I love the historic architecture, local businesses and proximity to the Cuyahoga River and Towpath Trail. It’s just such a great community with a lot of unique assets that can’t be found anywhere else in Cleveland.”

What do you do in your free time?

“I love going out to restaurants and trying new food and drinks. I also love being outside, whether it’s on a bike, paddleboard, or just taking a walk. Between taking the RTA rapid to Little Italy and University Circle, or having a picnic on the Downtown Malls, I’m always finding new ways to explore and adventure around the city. I also find any excuse I can to travel, and you’ll find me riding roller coasters at Cedar Point way too often.”

What’s one ‘hidden gem’ in the Warehouse District people should know about?

“Definitely the basement of Lulo Kitchen and Juice Bar. If you haven’t been, just go and check it out for yourself. You won’t regret it.”

What are you most looking forward to this summer in the Warehouse District?

“Enjoying all of the restaurant patios, seeing the streets filled with beauty and color once the District’s flower planters and hanging baskets are installed, and taking part in fun events and activations. There will be lots of exciting experiences and things to do throughout the District this summer - stay tuned!”

Where in the Warehouse District?

Can you tell what building in the Warehouse District this architectural feature belongs to?

Answer - 323 Lakeside

Designed by Christian, Schwarzenburg and Gaede for L.N. Gross Co., this building was meant to house the ladies’ shirtwaist division of the company. L.N. Gross Co. was one of the leading producers of ready-to-wear clothing in Cleveland during the early 20th century. They were also the first specialty manufacturer of women’s clothing in Cleveland.

You may also notice that the bricks on the building are a variety of colors. While this may appear to be a design choice, however, it has more to do with practicality than aesthetics. The building was built in 1917-1919 when brickmaking was more primitive and kilns often did not hold an even temperature throughout. This uneven temperature resulted in bricks being different colors depending on where they were placed in the kiln. If a single color of brick was desired for a project, they would be separated into colors. However, it was often more economical and practical to use a blend of bricks.

Today, kilns can be evenly heated and bricks can be more consistently colored. For those looking for a mismatched aesthetic, brickmakers will pull bricks from different batches to achieve that look.

Both born and raised in Lakewood, Sarah and Dom first met amongst a gathering of friends at The Root Café (formerly The Lakewood Phoenix). Though they both went to Lakewood High School, Dom is two years older than Sarah, so the two didn’t get to know each other until that fateful day at The Root when sparks just flew.

Fast forward a few years and the birth of one spunky son, Sarah and Dom knew that something in their life was missing—and that turned out to be the positivity, energy, and multitude of experiences that come with living in the heart of downtown Cleveland.
