Seafood lovers in Cleveland already know and love Kyler Smith, the face and fierce entrepreneur behind The Sauce Boiling Seafood Express.
Now, Kyler is preparing to open a brand new concept — a 120-seat restaurant and bar called Filter in the Warehouse District at 740 W Superior Ave.
Coming this July, Filter aims to inject a much-needed dose of nightlife and entertainment in the district. The new hotspot is gearing up to be unlike any other restaurant in Cleveland thanks to its modern aesthetics, design, and vibe.
At just 26 years old, Kyler has spent 10 years as a DJ throughout downtown Cleveland and traveling the country to perform shows. (You might’ve even heard him on Z107.9 FM!) From his touring and experiences, Kyler knew that Cleveland’s restaurant scene was missing the “vibe” of big cities like Los Angeles and Miami, which is how the concept for Filter was born.
Taking its name from the ever-popular Instagram filters, the restaurant will feature a photo booth to complement the rotating stream of DJs, cocktails, and music. Kyler has plans for many hospitality-centric staples as well, such as “Sunday Funday” brunches, as well as a private area for visiting celebrities or special events.
According to Cleveland Scene, the restaurant expects an impressive guest list of athletes, influencers, and brands — a scene that’s smack dab in the middle of Kyler’s wheelhouse. Being a party promoter in high school, a DJ for the Akron Zips in college, and radio personality, Kyler has cultivated an area of expertise in the world of entertainment and nightlife that he’s eager to share.
“After the success of The Sauce, I started experimenting with different ideas and came up with the concept for Filter,” said Kyler. “Being a DJ who travels a lot, I always pay attention to things in other cities, and I wanted to bring that out-of-town feel to Cleveland and give people a visual dining experience.”
With draped ceilings (that look like sculptural art) and other visual focal points, Filter offers an upscale experience in a relaxed environment, catering to people looking for full-service fine dining, a fancy cocktail, and everything in between.
Moreover, Filter’s cuisine will be led by Chef Jarrett Mine, who is a private chef for a handful of Cleveland Browns and Cavaliers players—including Myles Garrett!
“With Jarrett’s experience, I’m excited to have him take this next step with me at Filter and be a partner in this,” said Kyler. “He’s motivated and ready to kill the game. When celebrities or athletes come to town, I wanted to be able to deliver the same hospitality that I was used to as a DJ throwing parties. Now, we’ll be able to do that.”
Filter will be located at the site of the former Take 5 Rhythm and Jazz club in the Perry-Payne Building. “It was love at first sight,” Kyler said.
“Being a business owner in the Warehouse District is the coolest feeling. It’s everything that I dreamed of,” said Kyler. “When events are going on,you just feel the energy and I’m able to plan a lot of specials or promotions at my restaurants. I love it; I love seeing all the new faces and everyday traffic.”
